The Ultimate Paint and Body Guide Part 2- How To Strip Paint

It’s time to reach beneith the surface to see what is really hiding under that old paint on your ride. Find out which method is best for you as we delve into the many methods you can do to take it down to bare metal. Don’t rely on other paint protection products just try our car paint protection Adelaide.

Unless your project car has been hammered out of virgin sheetmetal, the first thing to do when considering new paint is figure out how to handle the paint that’s already there.

In some cases, the decision is pretty straightforward. Many painters consider a car’s original finish to be one of the best foundations you can have for fresh paint, provided what’s still on the car isn’t cracking, lifting, or showing other signs of wear or damage. As John Sloane of Eastwood put it, a car’s original finish “was applied with perfect prep and under ideal conditions, so it’s tough to beat.” If that’s the case with your project car, you can feel pretty secure about scuffing the original finish, then priming and shooting right over it.

Then again, how many potential project cars have you run into lately that still sport unblemished, original paint? More likely, the cars you’re looking to buy and build are covered with Lord-knows-how-many resprays over the top of Lord-knows-how-much body filler, questionable patch panels, bad welds, rust, or some combination of them all. And that is definitely not the kind of foundation you want under your spanking-new paint.

If you’re not completely familiar with a car’s history, how can you tell what may be lurking underneath that top layer of pigment? Well, there’s a decidedly low-tech method: Grab a piece of sandpaper, pick a spot on the car — preferably a location likely to have seen some damage over the years, like a rocker or rear quarter-panel — and start rubbing. (A pocketknife will work, too, if you can find a corner to pick at.) It won’t take long before you start revealing layers beneath the topcoat. Read them like tree rings: The more layers you find, the greater the certainty that a scuff job won’t cut it and a strip to bare metal is in order.

If you’re looking for a less intrusive way to judge the integrity of a car’s finish, Eastwood sells a couple of different types of paint-thickness gauges you can use without leaving a mark. Paint-thickness gauges — a magnetic version retails for about $50 and an ultrasonic one with a digital readout will set you back about $350 — are actually not 100 percent accurate, Sloane said. What these gauges do is measure the distance between the paint’s surface and the sheetmetal below (both gauges work only on steel bodies). OE paint will measure between 0.003 inch and 0.005 inch thick. If the measurement you get is more than 0.005 inch, chances are good “there’s something other than paint under there,” Sloane said. That rule of thumb doesn’t apply to custom paint jobs, however, which can measure .012-inch to .015-inch thick or more. But even so, if you’re running into paint that thick, it becomes “less and less desirable to put paint over what you have,” Sloane said. “At that thickness, you can’t assume you won’t develop cracks in the new paint as the different substrates beneath it expand and contract at different rates.”

There is another way to look at the strip versus scuff-and-shoot question. Most of the restoration specialists and high-end rod builders we spoke to prefer to start a paint job with a completely clean slate: bare metal. That way they know exactly what they’re building on as they put together a show-winning finish. So if you don’t own a car with well-preserved, original paint or you’re clearing a place on your mantel for a boatload of car-show trophies, read on to figure out the best plan of attack to get the starting point you need for eye-popping paint.

Paint-stripping techniques generally fall into two broad categories — mechanical and chemical. Mechanical stripping methods utilize some form of abrasive to remove paint from the metal. Abrasives range from good old-fashioned sandpaper to a variety of blasting media.

Do-it-yourselfers will usually default to sanding. Logistically, it’s the easiest method, as the disassembly process is simpler than for blasting or dipping the metal, and you don’t have to transport the car anywhere to get it done. It’s also far less expensive. The thousand or more dollars you’d pay for blasting or dipping can buy a lot of sandpaper, not to mention a new air-powered sander, sanding boards, maybe even a new compressor if you shop smart. (See the “Compressor Tips” sidebar for more info on powering your air tools.)

Yet sanding an entire car, even if you’re doing just the outside, is one of those jobs that’s measured in days, not hours. If there’s a ton of paint on the car, or if the paint is relatively new — and therefore strong — you’re going to be working it awhile, even if you’re using power sanders. And either way, your arms will ache for days afterward. But if you have more time and muscle than money, get out the paper and start rubbing.

One of sanding’s advantages is that you can easily tailor its aggressiveness to the job at hand. If all you need to do is scuff original paint, a light touch with 320- to 400-grit paper should do the trick. If you’re stripping down to metal, the consensus from our paint experts is that 80-grit is a good starting point. If your car’s finish is particularly stubborn or thick, stepping down to 40- or even 24-grit paper will help cut the tough stuff. Take care, though, as it’s very easy to gouge the metal when using paper that rough.

A power sander, whether a rotary or a dual-action (DA) sander, will cut your sanding time and effort considerably. A rotary sander generally spins faster than a DA, so it does offer more paint-cutting power, but there’s a risk of burning rather than removing the paint if you’re spinning the abrasive too fast. Burning the paint will, at best, clog your paper and waste material, and at worst, generate enough heat to warp the sheetmetal.

In some cases, you can remove paint more quickly by peeling it up with a razor blade than by rubbing it off with a sander. Jerry Sievers of Paint n Place told us he’s seen entire race trailers stripped not with abrasives but with razors. This can be especially effective if the paint you’re removing wasn’t applied well in the first place. If you catch an edge of poorly prepped paint with a razor, it’ll come off in sheets.

It’s a Blast

Media blasting is an amazing thing to watch. Layers of paint that would take days to sand off simply vaporize at the end of a high-pressure nozzle. Depending on the medium used and the nozzle’s line pressure, blasting can be gentle enough to strip wood and fiberglass or aggressive enough to cut through body filler and even rust.

If done improperly, however, media blasting can do more harm than good. Blast sheetmetal too hard, for too long, or with the wrong medium, and you’ll warp panels, either because the impact of the medium is stretching the metal or because excessive heat caused by the medium hitting the metal is making it expand. Straight, flat panels are particularly prone to warping. One of the blasters we visited, Ron Hambright of Hambro Industries, won’t blast Chevelle or El Camino hoods because the metal’s too thin. Given the potential for damage, do some research and get referrals regarding the blasting operators in your area before bringing them your project car.

The best medium for your stripping job depends on what you expect to find beneath the top layer of paint. If you’re stripping only a couple of coats of paint and you don’t anticipate encountering much body filler or rust, or if you’re stripping a nonmetal material such as fiberglass, a soft medium such as baking soda will work fine. The trade-off: Soda won’t cut into rust. For cancerous panels or sheetmetal that’s thickly coated with filler, a more aggressive medium such as aluminum oxide or DuPont’s StarBlast will work better. Even with the more abrasive media, though, the operator has the option of removing filler entirely or just roughing it up for paint.

No matter which medium you choose, some disassembly will be required before you take your car to the blaster. If you’re painting just the exterior, the prep job is easier, as all you need to remove are the car’s trim pieces, bumpers, lights, and so on. For an “outside only” job like this, blasters can mask over glass to protect it from overspray and ricocheting media. But if you’re planning a full-on, jambs-included, inside-and-out color change, you’ll need to take off the doors, hood, and trunk lid, plus strip the interior of all upholstery, glass, carpet, and the instrument panel. Better access for the blasting nozzle gives you a more complete strip job.

It makes a difference regarding the job’s price, too. The blasters we visited didn’t have set prices for their work; the cost of the stripping depended on how much prep they had to do, how much car there was to strip, how long it took to get the metal clean, and whether the job was outside-only or inside-and-out. The more disassembly work you can do to make the blaster’s job easier, the less the job will cost.

Given all the variables listed above, the blasters we interviewed were hesitant to give exact price quotes. But here are some ballpark figures: Hambright, who uses StarBlast for most automotive sheetmetal, said an outside-only job for a typical muscle-era car would run about $500. An “inside, outside, underneath” job on a unibody car like a Mustang runs closer to $1,400, he said, “and that’s every part of the car, including suspension.” A stripped ’57 Chevy we photographed at Hambro was a $700 job, but that was because “there were no inner fenders to do, no frame or suspension pieces,” Hambright said.

Manny Vega, whose Anacapa Soda Blasting stripped Editor Rob Kinnan’s ’69 Camaro with baking soda, estimated the job at between $1,400 and $1,600. That encompassed the body’s exterior (including the fenders, cowl, and other miscellaneous parts, which were off the car) and the inside of one door, but not the rest of the interior, the firewall, or front subframe.

Both blasting shops perform a thorough cleaning of the car after blasting.

Hambro blows the StarBlast media out with compressed air and is able to reuse it. The Anacapa crew blows, vacuums, and even hoses out the used soda, which basically turns to talc on impact and can’t be used again.

Water on bare sheetmetal? Yep. Vega claims the soda dries out the panels so thoroughly that as long as there’s no standing water on the steel, it won’t oxidize for days, even weeks. (Anacapa is located in Oxnard, California, near the coast, and we saw a lot of bare metal there that hadn’t started to oxidize even after sitting for months.)

Because it’s a relatively soft medium, soda will leave the bare metal fairly smooth. Some painters may want to scuff the metal with fine paper to promote adhesion before shooting primer. A medium like StarBlast, on the other hand, leaves the surface a little rougher, so no sanding is necessary prior to priming, Hambright said. Outdoor Picnic Parties are Better with Catered

No matter just how elegant an indoor operation room is, in some cases using the very same establishments once more and also once again on every occasion can easily be disinteresting. Interior locations employ synthetic lights and ventilation, whether it is a lunch gathering or an evening soiree. To add a fresh standpoint to your following party, try doing it al fresco. Or (to be much more specific) hold your next family members gathering, company operation, or whatever festivity looming on the horizon, picnic-style. Search out tender, juicy barbecue at some of Australia’s tastiest BBQ events and festivals.

If you believe picnics are too informal for your feature, think once more: a barbecue, by meaning, is an outside event where meals are consumed. It does not matter if your location is as quaint as the yard grass or as elegant as the sprawling grounds of a big manor estate, white-gloved event catering as well as all. Barbecues are ideally satisfied throughout the summer months, when it is sunny outdoors. The stuffy weather can be a commitment to take dinners in the pleasure of a breezy location under the sunlight, preferably a picturesque destination to add a point of passion to the event.

Just what occasions, and also how barbecues can easily add zest to these occasions, are discussed under:

Birthday celebrations or Anniversaries

These are, by far, the events most ideal for a picnic configuration. Since these are typically intimate gatherings among friends and relative, a barbecue with possibly a barbeque cookout and outside online games will certainly occupy for hours on end. An event of this kind can conveniently be held in the yard; the laid-back setting of the occasion pairs well with the casual setting, without the necessity to make a “statement” for the guests.

Corporate Functions

This is a little more complicated to set up because of the more significant number of individuals to fit, in addition to being a level much more formal than, state, a birthday, for instance. Celebrations are expected to be satisfaction events; having said that superior-subordinate and also collegial connections are still crucial things to be maintained. As a result, a larger location would definitely be appropriate, like a park or public yard. If intriguing surroundings is a slight consideration, or if the business has finances restraints, at that point the outside car park might be the next greatest some things. It’s actually a creative means to deliver normally swamped professionals together, to talk about things beyond the shop.

Wedding ceremonies

A wedding event is the occasion wherein two people are signed up with as partners for life, which union is solemnized in a service. Consequently, marriage ceremonies are tend to official occasions where people are needed to obtain dressy. To match the event, a spot of elegance need to exist in a wedding ceremony picnic. As an alternative of a cookout, a commendable catering service could be better for the feature. Tables, covered in de rigeur tablecloth must seat visitors pleasantly, also for something held outdoors. Primarily, it’s just taking the entire entourage to eat outside instead of in a resort ballroom or additional posh operation room. To preserve the beauty of the occasion, it needs to be held in an area with a perspective to lovely views. Here the lakeside with a pavilion nearby (for the standard after-wedding dances) would suit perfectly. Some engaged couples, however, could conversely utilize a seaside setting up in the mid-day: the sunset will definitely make an exceptional romantic scenery to the barbecue.

Area Trips

College events outdoors are typically travels to the zoo or the neighborhood park, and certainly a cookout is next to impossible right here due to the itinerant quality of the activity. A picnic right here is therefore a brief stay at a fascinating outdoor spot, where the students and chaperones relax to eat their pack lunches, or purchase from food sellers discovered in such sites.

No one ever said that picnics are to be arranged days in advance, so any type of family could take place a picnic, depending on the caprices of the moment. One simply takes his or her plate as well as heads off to the yard or yard. Whatever the event, a picnic will certainly include a whole brand-new measurement of fun to any type of occasion. You Will Have to Undergo Some Driving Lessons Before You Are Allowed to Drive a Car on the Road

To anticipate spending too much money on medical expenses and car repair, purchasing insurance coverage is a good idea. In the event of accident, other people can be in danger too. If you are at fault, other people who are involved in the accident may file lawsuits against you. This particular circumstance will direct auto insurance company to handle all the necessary requirements, for example providing a lawyer, paying court fees, etc. When you drive a vintage car it feels boring because of dents but what you can do to restore it is by using a car detailing products Australia.

Insurance company eliminates the hassles, so you will be able to do your everyday activities without worrying about the issues too much. Another reason is that driving without insurance is basically against the law, and there will be penalties for that. Please put in mind that penalties vary between states. The difference can only be in terms of specific details, as instructed by the DMV of your state. All states have the same penalties, but there are differences in the amount of fines, procedures to reinstate insurance, etc. Some of the most common penalties are briefly outlined below.

Driving Ban & Suspended Registration

If you are caught driving without valid insurance, you will be banned from driving and your vehicle’s registration will also be suspended. There is a very simple rule: if the car has no insurance, the vehicle has no plate as well. Commonly you have to turn in the vehicle’s plates to the local DMV. In certain states, such as in New York, car insurance must be provided by a licensed company, meaning your insurer has to be listed or licensed by New York State Department of Financial Services.

Every state has a local insurance department where you can obtain a list of licensed insurers. Please make sure you only purchase coverage from the listed car insurance companies to get valid proof of insurance. In New York, insurance coverage provided by any insurer from any other state will not be considered valid. It makes sense since every state has different details in traffic regulations. If you are driving without insurance, the New York State will suspend your vehicle’s registration until certain time period.

If registration suspension exceeds 90 days, your driver license will be suspended too, meaning you cannot drive any vehicle anymore until your driver license is reinstated. In New York, you have to pay a fee of $25 – $50 to reinstate the driver license. It is better to turn in your plates to the New York DMV before your insurance coverage ends; you will then get a receipt to proof that you already turned the plates in. This rule also applies even if your car is in the storage or parked at public road.

Car Gets Towed

Excluding New Hampshire, all states in the United States penalize uninsured drivers. However, each state implements different set of rules concerning the fines and other penalties. If you commit any traffic offense, your car will be pulled over and the officer will ask you to produce driver license, vehicle titles, and proof of insurance. You will be fined based on the offense. In most states, if you fail to produce proof of insurance, your car will be towed away and impounded.

Because you were driving the car when it was pulled over, you will be responsible for paying the storage fees and fines to get the car back. Depending on the state where you live, the total amount can be thousands of dollars. Considering you have to also purchase insurance before you can repossess the car, it is safe to say you will spend more money in addition to the fines and storage fees. Usually, you will need at least liability coverage to take the car back. However, if your driver license is suspended due to traffic offenses such as DUI (Driving under Influence) or other violations, you may have to take someone with a valid driver license.

You can bring the original insurance document, the copy of it, or simply fax it depending on the DMV. Please also make sure that you bring enough money to pay all the charges. Instead of paying thousands of dollars, it is best to purchase insurance coverage which is probably way less expensive. You can use online car insurance calculator to estimate the price of insurance policies from almost every insurer.

SR-22 Requirements

Once again, depending on the state where you live, proof of insurance can be in different forms. One of the most common is SR-22 document, which basically shows you have the least minimum liability requirement to be considered legal for driving. There are some situations where SR-22 is obligatory such as when you are caught for driving under influence, at fault in the event of accident, you commit too many traffic offenses, or having non-valid driver license.

If you are required to obtain an SR-22 document, you will have to maintain the minimum insurance requirement of the state in which the document is issued and keep the document for usually 3 years, even if you move to other states. If in any case your insurance lapses or is cancelled, your vehicle registration and driver license will be suspended again. SR-22 requirements can be different from state to state, but you can ask your local DMV or insurance company for more details.

Besides SR-22 document and insurance card issued by your insurer, there are two more valid proofs of insurance that you can use. In some states, the preferred form is electronic database sent by your insurer to the DMV. Even if your insurance company uses this procedure, you must always keep the insurance card with you as backup. It is worth mentioning that some people choose not to be insured, yet they use a different form of responsibility, which is a large amount of deposit. Surprisingly, many states allow people to use this form indeed.

There are two possible methods you can use if you choose not to purchase insurance policy from any company. First, you have to make large deposit but the amount varies depending on the state; it is usually from $25,000 to $100,000. Another way is to purchase or secure a bond with a surety company. The surety bond company should be an authorized one in your state. If you prefer to use one of those methods, please make sure to keep the certificate of bond or deposit with you.

Fines

The car is indeed yours after you purchase it, but you are not allowed to drive it on the road unless you also buy insurance coverage for it. The car should be covered by at least liability insurance before it can get to roadway. When you are pulled over due to any reason, the police officer will ask for insurance card or any other valid proof of insurance.

If you cannot produce it, you will receive a ticket in addition to the actual reason why you were pulled over in the first place. For example, if you are being stopped for speeding or driving in the wrong lane, and you are currently not insured, the tickets you receive will include all those offenses. Again, depending on the states, you will probably be able to dismiss the ‘driving without insurance’ ticket.

The other violations have been committed, and there is no way to dismiss the tickets. If you can produce the proof of insurance within the time period indicated on the ticket, this specific offense can be dismissed. This is possible only if you were actually insured at the traffic stop, yet for whatever reason you did not bring insurance card or any other proof of insurance. Based on this, even the best car insurance companies in the world will not be able to save you from the fines.

In case where you were not insured at all at the traffic stop, you have to deal with an exceptionally high fine. In Ontario, for example, the minimum fine for this offense is $5,000. According to NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners), the exact amount varies by state, but it typically starts from $5,000 to $10,000. There is also a 25% surcharge added to the actual fee. Driving without insurance doesn’t make any sense, since you can get cheap auto insurance easily from many companies.

Jail Time

Jail time is usually for repeat offenses only. Uninsured driver will be put in jail for a maximum of 30 days depending on the situation. To make things worse, you still have to appear in court and pay the fines based on the offenses you committed. You will therefore are penalized with both penalties. Based on a study conducted by IRC (Insurance Research Council) in 2011, one out of seven drivers in United States is uninsured.

The main reason is that insurance policies are expensive, which is not a good excuse after all. If you do a little online research, you will find numerous websites providing car insurance estimate services for you free of charge. The websites usually access some of the most reputable insurers in the state and perform the estimation based on the personal data you provide such as age, car model, address, mileage, etc.

Such estimation will not be 100% accurate, but you can at least predict the actual amount you need to pay. If you won’t use independent estimator, you can ask for car insurance quotes from almost every company in the state. Those companies nowadays provide the quotes for free, and you can get it without buying their policies.

What happens if the other driver has no car insurance?

No Pay No Play

This is a relatively new penalty, and it is currently only implemented in 8 states across United States including Oregon, North Dakota, Alaska, Iowa, California, Michigan, Louisiana, and New Jersey. The law basically states that uninsured drivers are not allowed to receive compensations from insured drivers regardless who are at fault in the event of accidents. In Montana, for example, uninsured drivers are allowed to file a lawsuit against their insured counterparts to obtain compensation for non-economic damages.

With ‘no pay, no play’ law, uninsured drivers are prohibited from doing so because they basically are not providing the same benefits to others. In the simplest way, uninsured drivers are considered cheating on those who are insured. Those who do not have insurance will not be allowed to collect compensation for non-economic damages from other drivers who actually have insurance policies.

This can be a good idea, since there are cheap auto insurance quotes all over the market, and some people simply don’t want to purchase it even if it is against the law. The only way that uninsured drivers can file a lawsuit is when they pay large deductible (usually around $10,000). Only after that they can sue for property damage.

In some less developed countries, drivers are allowed to use their vehicles on roadway without any proof of insurance. All they need are vehicle registration and driver license. By contrast, in countries such as United States, Canada, United Kingdom and other European countries, driving without insurance is a serious offense. As a matter of fact, the fines and penalties for such violation is often more expensive than the price of purchasing insurance policies. Click here if you need a detailed results of your car.

Glass Can Be Scratched When It Gets Dirty

Car glass can get dirty and scratched up, making it difficult to see through. Whenever you get light scratches in your car glass, consider polishing the scratches away. The first step in polishing your glass is cleaning the exterior and interior sides. Then, polish the exterior side of the glass and apply a sealant. Our car polishing machine will remove scratches from glass and prevent that aggravation and cost!

Choose the right time and place. When washing your car, cleaning and polishing the windows should be the last thing you do. You should also clean the glass while working out of direct sunlight, while the windows are fairly dry. Otherwise, the sun may dry out the glass cleaner, leaving streaks behind.

Select the right supplies.[1] A glass cleaner specifically labeled for automotive use is better than an ordinary household glass cleaner, which often contains ammonia and other chemicals that can be dangerous for use on cars. A microfiber towel is also a necessity, since it has enough abrasiveness to gently scrub the surface of the glass without scratching it.

Roll down the windows halfway. You need to be able to have clear access to the top edge of the glass.

Spray the glass cleaner on the window. Clean the glass by wiping the cleaner onto the window using your microfiber cloth, moving from side to side. Cover both sides of the glass.

Use the dry side of the microfiber cloth. Remove any remaining wetness on your windows by drying them with the dry side of the cloth.

Roll your windows up and clean the bottom half. Spray with glass cleaner, wipe the cleaner on, and wipe the cleaner off.

Clean your front and back windshields. Spray the cleaner on the windshields and wipe it with your microfiber cloth, moving both up and down and side to side. Remove the dampness with the dry side of your cloth.

Once the stubborn grime has been cleaned off your windows, you can remove any streaks or film with clean, plain water. Gently spray the glass, using a hose for the outside and a spray bottle for the inside. Wipe the glass dry with a clean microfiber towel.

Select a glass polish. There are many glass polishers available on the market.

Use a low-speed rotary polisher. The polisher needs to have a speed setting between 1000 and 1200 RPM, and it must have a polishing pad.

Apply lubricating oil to the polishing pad.[3] The oil helps the polish to spread more, reducing the amount of polish you need to use, thereby reducing the amount of abrasiveness.

Apply the polish to the polishing pad. Use as much as directed on the product label, or apply an even spread of polish across the entire pad.

Start at the upper corner of the glass. Hold the handle with your dominant hand and use your other hand to guide the polisher. Do not apply pressure, since the pad will apply enough pressure on its own to polish the glass.

Cover the entire glass. Move the machine from side to side at a gradual pace. Do not jerk the rotary polisher around, since doing so will increase the likelihood of accidentally damaging your glass. Keep going until the entire surface of the glass has been moistened with polish, and stop the machine once the polish begins to dry.

Be aware of the fact that the rotary polisher has a specific pattern of movement. When moved to the right, the machine also moves upward. When moved to the left, the machine also moves downward. Do not fight the rhythm of the machine. Instead, learn to work with it.

Buff the remaining polish residue away. Use a clean microfiber cloth to buff the residue away using even, gentle pressure and a small circular motion. Continue buffing until no streaks or residue remains.

Apply a glass sealant. Your car glass is now completely stripped. A glass sealant helps the glass stay smooth and clear for a longer period of time by sealing the pores of the glass. Apply a small amount of sealant onto an automotive sponge and wipe the sponge across the glass, moving from side to side and up to down.

Use as much sealant as necessary to seal the entire exterior surface of the glass. Tips Note that a glass polish cannot remove chips and cracks. For these more severe blemishes, you should contact someone who specializes in glass repair and replacement. Warnings Avoid the use of ammonia-based chemical cleaners or cleaners that contain isopropyl alcohol. These chemicals can release toxic fumes if inhaled inside the enclosed space of your car. Moreover, they will damage the color on tinted glass windows.

Washing a Car – Simple, But Has to Be Done the Right Way

You’ve spent a lot of money on your car, you are proud of it and want to keep it looking nice, right? Despite your best intentions, you are likely damaging your car’s paint in your attempts to take care of it. You make a practice of regularly going to the drive-through car wash. However, you don’t know what sand, oil, contaminants and assorted muck the other cars left behind that are being kicked up and pelted into your car’s finish. You trust that the operator is using appropriate car washing detergent in the right amount, but are they? Detailcentral.com.au provides professional car cleaning products and automotive detailing products and supplies used to keep cars spotless and clean, inside and out.

I once went through a “touchless” car wash only to have the attendant come out at the end of the wash and start scrubbing the front of my car with a push broom! I yelled at him to stop. He looked amazed and said that most people want that because it gets all of the dirt off. Arrrgh… a push broom on my paint! He might as well have pulled out his electric sander and sanded my car!

If you are really careful you may hand wash your car at home, taking great care not to damage your paint. You wash with a terry cloth or shop rag, dry with a “shammy” and wax it like your dad taught you, not realizing how rough these materials are on your paint.

Yet when you are giving it a good last wipe, you see fine swirl marks in your reflection. Are they getting worse? How did those get there in the first place? Well, I hate to tell you that if you are washing your car like most people do, you are the one putting that lovely swirl design in your “baby’s” finish. And those marks signify damage. Car paint has changed from when your dad purchased his first car. You have to treat it differently than what you may have thought, in order to protect the clear coat (the clear, protective layer applied on top of the paint at the factory). In years past, paint was laid on thicker than it is today.

Now it is thinner, with a protective clear coat that is about as thick as a single sheet of paper. Once you scratch through it, your paint is exposed and vulnerable to the elements. Those swirl marks are scratches in your clear coat. How can you avoid damaging your paint in the first place? Can you repair damage you’ve already done? You can start by not making the five mistakes listed below and by following the guidelines that are provided. You will be amazed at how inexpensive and simple they are to follow and how great your car will look after you make a practice of doing them.

5 Car Washing Mistakes That Will Damage Your Car’s Paint

-DON’T use a sponge or brush to wash your car.
The surface of the sponge and stiff bristles on the brush will scratch your car’s paint. They will also pick up micro-contaminants such as small grit and sand that will act as sandpaper as you move the sponge or brush over the surface of the car. Only use a brush on your wheels and tires.

–DON’T wash your car under the blazing sun.
Although it feels nice to get a little sun as you wash your car, the sun dries the soap on your car and you get a dull, soapy residue as a result. Also the water will evaporate faster than you can wipe it off and you will get damaging water spots on your paint.

–DON’T wax your car.
Wax only lasts about 30 days in warm weather and is especially vulnerable to melting at high temperatures. It also gets washed away during rainy days and when you wash your car. So your car’s paint surface is not as protected you think. Besides that, you’ve wasted a few hours for no real gain. Also think about this. Waxing involves fairly hard rubbing of our paint’s surface to both apply and remove the wax. If the surface of your car isn’t really clean and contaminant free, you could be grinding small grit into the surface.

–DON’T use dish washing detergent.
The chemicals in these detergents are very harsh on your paint and can damage it.

–DON’T Use a “shammy”, bath towel or shop rag to dry your car.
Boy, this goes against what many people think, doesn’t it? They think a “shammy” is great for soaking up water, but again, like using sponges and brushes while washing, it can trap particles that can scratch your car’s paint as you rub it all over your car. So now you know what not to do, here is what you can do to avoid damage, better protect your car’s finish and have a fantastic sheen on your “baby”.

5 Easy, Inexpensive Techniques To Wash and Detail Your Car

–DO use a micro-fiber cloth or mitt when you wash your car.
These products are particularly well suited for use on the surface of your paint without inflicting damage. They can be found at most auto part stores and even though they may cost a little more than what you may have been using, the investment is well worth it.

–DO wash your car in the shade.
Find a shady spot. They key here is to avoid direct sun so that the soapy residue won’t have time to build up on your car’s paint. It also allows more time to thoroughly dry off your car before damaging water spots form.

–DO use a synthetic paint sealant on your car.
Not only does waxing not really provide the protection you think it does, it’s unnecessarily hard work! Synthetic sealants are much easier to apply and far easier and faster to wipe off. Plus they don’t melt or wash off and offer up to six months of protection. Again, they can be found in most auto part stores.

–DO use soaps formulated specifically for car paint.
Like the special detergent recommended for your delicate clothes, automotive detergents are formulated specifically to clean your car’s finish. The nice part about them is that a little amount goes a long way, so you really will be saving money in the end by investing in a high quality auto detergent.

–DO use micro-fiber towels when drying your car.
Like washing your car, using a micro-fiber towel is crucial to not rubbing left-over grit into your car’s paint. They are amazingly effective at removing water, too, much more so than a towel.

Car Paintwork Damaged by Bird Lime? Learn What to Do About It

Bird poo, bird s***, bird lime, bird droppings, whatever you want to call it, if you take pride in the appearance of your car, you can’t ignore it. Depending upon the weather, after a decent ‘fall’ the finish on your paint can be so badly damaged it’s going to need a trip to the body shop. Paint protection film will last long but it depends on the painter that works in your car, if they knew what they are doing the paint will really last longer than you expected.

If you haven’t experienced it you are either very lucky, are extremely diligent, or don’t take too much notice of your car’s paintwork condition! The usual tell-tale is that when you wash your car you notice a dull patch on your pride and joy. All the washing (and usually all the polishing) in the world and it’s still there.

First of all, a little about what actually causes the damage.

Until fairly recently it was assumed that the lime itself within bird droppings was actually eating into the paintwork itself. Recent studies by car polish experts Autoglym (whose products are approved by manufacturers such as Bentley, Jaguar and Aston Martin, so they know a thing or two) have carried out extensive tests that dispelled that myth.

The lacquer that covers your car paintwork expands and softens slightly as it warms, such as when parked in direct sunlight. Those warm panels soon cause any ‘deposit’ to harden. When things cool down again the lacquer moulds itself around the offending item and behold, the damage is done.

Tests were carried out with strongly alkali, neutral and strongly acidic ‘bird dropping substitutes’ (I know, the mind boggles doesn’t it?) and negligible differences between the damage caused was seen. It was noted that those ‘deposits’ with a ‘higher grain to liquid content’ caused a greater levels of dullness.

So, if your pride and joy has suffered, what can you do?

Well, depending on the severity of the damage you have different options;

Catch It Early
Ideally of course you will spot the droppings quickly and be able to wipe them off carefully with a wet cloth. If so, well done, no damage done.

Light Lacquer Damage
If after a wash you see a dull patch (it’s the light refracting badly through the damaged lacquer), you can try and gently polish the area and see what happens. Don’t do it if you’re not comfortable with what you’re doing. If in any doubt, go see an expert. You may just be very lucky and the lacquer damage is sufficiently minimal that an accommodating body shop may be able to ‘flat and machine polish’ the offending area with 100% success. Or you may decide that the ‘almost perfect’ result is acceptable to you in the face of the alternative, which is…

Irretrievable lacquer and/or paint damage
In a lot of the cases we see, the finish is too far gone for polishing. The only alternative is to refinish the offending panel, which will invariably involve a visit to the bodyshop. It’s worth mentioning that the damage can be inflicted in hours, it needn’t take days or weeks to happen.

If you are unlucky and it’s necessary to repaint part of the panel, if the resultant repair ends up within around 150mm from an adjacent panel, it may also be necessary to ‘blend’ the new colour across the adjacent panel to avoid any colour mismatch.

In terms of costs, shop around to find a reputable bodyshop that will charge less than £200 for a single panel, plus around £110 per ‘blend’ if needed. Bonnets (hood), bootlids (trunk) and roofs are of course very often the damaged panels and you can expect to pay a little more for those.

So, sorry to be the bearer of bad news. The fact is that untreated bird droppings very often causes damage that needs a bodyshop.

The only way to avoid it? Don’t park outside (tricky) or carry some specialist wipes (Autoglym make some) and be extremely vigilant!

Oh, and on a final positive note: Try imagining all those Autoglym testers mixing up a range of different ‘bird dropping substitutes’ without smiling to yourself…

Federal Highway Administration Unveils National ‘Alternative Fuel and Electric Charging’ Network

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) today announced 55 routes that will serve as the basis for a national network of “alternative fuel” corridors spanning 35 states. Though the network is nearly 85,000 miles long, more miles will be added in the future to accommodate electric, hydrogen, propane and natural gas vehicles as additional fueling and charging stations are built. Finding a good company that can provide a detailed print for your business stickers Sydney is the first step to achieve the design that you want.

“Alternative fuels and electric vehicles will play an integral part in the future of America’s transportation system,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “We have a duty to help drivers identify routes that will help them refuel and recharge those vehicles and designating these corridors on our highways is a first step.”

Those corridors designated as “sign-ready,” meaning routes where alternative fuel stations are currently in operation, will be eligible to feature new signs alerting drivers where they can find fuel for their alternative fuel vehicles. These signs are similar to existing signage that alerts drivers to gas stations, food, and lodging. The designation of these corridors fulfills a directive in the “Fixing America’s Surface Transportation” (FAST) Act.

In July, Secretary Foxx called on states to nominate national plug-in electric vehicle (EV) charging and hydrogen, propane and natural gas fueling corridors along major highways. The specific fuels were designated by Congress in the FAST Act.

In 2015, the United States pledged to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80 percent or more by 2050. By supporting lower-emission vehicles, alternative fuel corridors will help to reduce transportation emissions, the leading source of U.S. GHG emissions. According to new FHWA data, U.S. drivers consumed nearly 72 billion gallons of gasoline in the first half of 2016 – a 3 percent increase over the same period a year earlier and the largest percentage increase in nearly two decades – and drove more than 3.15 trillion miles last year.

“Identifying where alternative fueling stations can be found will help the public in many ways,” said Federal Highway Administrator Gregory Nadeau. “This initial designation sets the stage for the next round of nominations early next year and begins a conversation with stakeholders about developing and implementing a vision to enable coast to coast travel using alternative fuels.”

The new alternative fuel corridor signs were designed to be easily recognizable. The new signs, and a list of the new sign-ready corridors, can be found on the FHWA website at https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/alternative_fuel_corridors.

Taking The Dread Out Of The Car Hunt

Want to go shopping for a new or used car but aren’t sure how to start? Perhaps you are just too busy, or maybe you don’t know what to look for. Stop yourself from wasting valuable time and finances with inefficient car hunting by employing the advice of this article. You are sure to gain all of the necessary insights. Wide variety of car wash products is now offered by detailing companies but the question is what product is applicable to your car? I think you should consider that question before going into shopping for car products.

If you can’t afford it, don’t be persuaded by a talented salesman. Many people get hoodwinked into buying a sports car because salespeople say the person looks good in it. Keep in mind that a salesperson is trying their best to make a decent commission, so selling a more expensive car benefits them.

Washing Car with Sponge

Do you know that it is possible to get yourself a car loan over the Internet without visiting a dealership? A big reason why the process of buying a car takes a long time is because they have to run your credit and find a lender. This will help to expedite the entire process.

Figure out your budget and then go to see the dealer — in that order. If you are shopping for a car, never exceed your budget. He doesn’t have to pay the bill!

If you are paying a high payment on a luxury vehicle right now, do not take that car with you. This will end up costing you a lot of money in the long run.

Shop at month’s end. Everyone has a quota to meet each month. As month’s end approaches, salespeople who have not yet met their quotas may be more amenable to giving you a better deal in order to increase their numbers.

Social security numbers should not be given until a deal is made. Some dealers will ask for this info upfront so they can run your credit. You should not let multiple dealers run your credit. Therefore, wait until you have negotiated a deal before giving out your Social Security information.

Make sure you stay silent about any trade-ins. Until you settle on a good price for a car you are buying, do not say you want to trade in a car. When a salesperson knows about your trade-in, he or she may factor it into the sales price, which can work against you.

Read everything before you sign it! You should not just sign the contract without reading. Ensure you read it from top to bottom. Once you sign, you are legally bound by the entire document. If you do not want to read it when you’re in the dealership, ask them if you can bring it home to read it. If you can’t do this, then obtain a purchase agreement or a copy of the contract to look at.

Research properly when you want to buy a car that is used. You can find a lot of information on the Internet. Blue book websites are great for finding out about a car’s value. When the dealer won’t come close to those rates, leave.

Try to avoid an as-is warranty at all costs when car shopping. You will probably regret that decision if you make it. The dealer needs to give you a 30 to 90 day guarantee if you’re buying a car. Be aware that if the engine or transmission breaks once you drive away, you will end up having to pay for the repairs.

Try to get all of the prices possible for the car that you want. You may discover that other zip codes in your region offer better prices than you can find closer to home. Looking at price trends online will help to give you an idea of which cities offer the best prices.

Prior to negotiation, figure out what incentives are available. Do some research on trade-ins, rebates, warranties, incentives and bank fees. You can only negotiate well if you understand what is realistic.

The first offer a salesman gives you won’t be the lowest possible offer. The second time will be the better deal, and likely the lowest. They want to reach an agreement, thus they are likely to stop wasting time by then.

Make sure you have discovered any rebates ahead of time. A lot of dealers will offer the rebate to you as an incentive for getting you to buy the car. Less reputable dealers won’t tell you about the rebate and just keep the money for themselves.

After negotiating a bit on the price of the car you want, talk about your trade in. You might be disappointed by the price your old car brings, but it pays to stay flexible in order to take advantage of the new car price you found appealing. You’ve done enough work, now it’s time to buy.

Now that you understand more about car shopping, you should have no trouble finding a great car. Getting a car that works with your lifestyle is very important these days. Begin searching for the perfect car today!
