How to Choose the Right Corporate Entertainer for Your Corporate Event Entertainment

Your CEO introduces the entertainment for the evening and then, slowly, everything comes crashing to a halt. Instead of the laughter and applause that you hoped to hear, you hear silence and heavy sighs. The talent, which you thought was the perfect corporate entertainer for your group, panics and starts insulting the audience. You slowly slink down into your chair and wonder if your resume is up-to-date.

As Maya Angelou once said, “People will forget what you said and forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” While the food may be great and the room looks beautiful, these will be quickly forgotten. What your group won’t forget is how miserable they felt watching the entertainer you chose to add some “fun” and excitement” to your event. It’s odd that, sometimes, an events manager will spend months on planning certain aspects of an event – food, hotel, decorations, etc – but wait to the last minute to book the proper corporate event entertainment.

Here are a few corporate event entertainment ideas that will help you to make the right choice of a corporate entertainer for your next meeting or event.

1) Hit Your Homework – Stop relying on a speaker’s agency or entertainment agency to always book your talent. Many leading corporate entertainers don’t necessarily work with agents and, therefore, you can miss out on some great talent. While agents can be a good source for talent, they are not the only way to go. Don’t think that just because a corporate entertainer is on the agent’s roster that the agent has actually worked with that talent. Should you be willing to “broaden your options,” do a Google search for terms like funny motivational speaker or entertaining motivational speaker. Here you will find many corporate entertainers that can help you add the “WOW” factor to your event.

2) Delve into the Demos – Once you have chosen an entertainer or two, carefully watch the talent’s demo and see if he/she is a good fit for your group. This is the fastest way to confirm that the particular entertainer will work for you and saves you time – because if you don’t like the video, you can quickly move on to your next candidate. While watching the demo, see if the talent has worked for similar groups. Notice the demographics of the group. Does the video reveal crowd reactions? Is the laughter and applause real or is it canned? Are there multiple performance clips or is the video mostly one performance? Did the corporate entertainer receive multiple standing ovations or just one?

3) Survey the Site – If you like the demo, peruse the talent’s site to see exactly what type of corporate entertainment he/she provides. Observe if the corporate entertainer has a number of program options. Additionally, look at the companies for which the talent has worked and then read those company’s testimonials. Many corporate entertainers flash logos of companies on their site; however, when checking for testimonials from those companies on the talent’s site, those testimonials may not be present. If a talent is showing a logo of a company, it delivers the assumption that he/she has worked with that company and, therefore, logically, the talent should have a testimonial to back up that claim. If they don’t, then what should you assume?

4) Testimonials are Tops – Video testimonials have taken the place of referrals. Instead of having to call someone to get a referral on a talent, a video testimonial will tell you everything you need to know. What you should look for in a video testimonial is who is giving the testimonial and what they said. The testimonial should be from the person who booked the talent and – for corporate event entertainment – that should be from an events manager, marketing or sales executive or higher. Audience member testimonials are fine; however, you want to hear from someone in corporate who actually booked the talent. Since most corporate entertainers who are good at their job have been doing it for some time, the written testimonials will, undoubtedly, outweigh those on video. However, there should be enough video testimonials to provide you with solid information as to the quality of the service you can expect from the entertainer.

5) Talk to the Talent – Once you have accessed that a particular corporate entertainer may be perfect for your employee appreciation event or client appreciation event, then contact the talent directly. A few minutes on the phone will shed some light on how well the talent will not only work for your group, but also work with you. As with all events, flexibility is the key. If your talent has too many demands or needs, then you may need to look elsewhere. After all, you are dealing with the demands and needs of your group and your executives. You don’t need a “needy” entertainer, as well. During your call discuss fees, staging requirements and, most importantly, how the entertainer can help you add the “WOW” factor to your event.

Bottom line: Taking the time to find the right corporate entertainer for your corporate event entertainment does require “time.” However, event managers take the time to: plan multiple site visits; make copious calls to hotel catering; agonize over decorations, strategize hotel bookings and loads more to make sure the event is a success. Don’t let your decision for your corporate event entertainment be one of the last things you do, and don’t always leave it up to one source. Remember, your group probably won’t remember exactly what they ate or the details of the decorations on the table, but they will never forget how miserable they felt watching a lousy corporate entertainer.

You only get an additional of 1% when you reached a sales volume of $300+, 2% for a sales volume of $500+, and so on.

And guess what’s the sales volume to hit in order to reach your total of 70%. $150,000+!

TurboSquid

TurboSquid claims to be the most trusted source for 3ds Max, Maya, Revit and Softimage models in the industry.

However the royalty rates are not attractive. For starters, you get only 40% royalty from your sales. And similar to 3D Export, to be eligible for higher rates, you have to sell exclusively on their website by joining their SquidGuild program. That means whichever products that you have selling on other 3D websites, have to be removed!

There have also been complaints from companies claiming their art are being sold on Turbosquid.com website without their knowledge or approval.

The3DStudio

The3DStudio started since 1996 and is the oldest and largest resource site in the Internet.

As they have been around in the industry for over 13 years, they have earned the trust of the top artists in the 2D & 3D community.

Joining and listing your products is free. And you can set your own prices as well. Besides selling 3D models, you can also sell your stock photos, textures, materials and shaders. What the site gets in return is a percentage from your sales. But you will get back the most, 60% from your sales, and 70% if you join their Loyalty Program, one of the highest royalty rates in the industry. Those that join the Loyalty Program are simply rewarded with a very high payout rate.

What’s great about this Loyalty Program is that its NOT an Exclusivity Program like the ones that 3D Export and Turbosquid provide.

Step 3: Upload Your Products

This is the part where it gets exciting. To have your products seen by buyers around the world.

Organize Your Folders

Before you start uploading, organise your files by separating all your renders and asset files for each products from your other working files. Save each product as a separate folder, and naming it “FINAL” or something like that. It will save you the trouble of uploading the wrong files.

Save To As Many Formats As You Can

And also save your asset to as many formats as you can. Some of the most popular formats are 3ds Max (.max), Maya (.ma,.mb,.mp), Cinema 4D (.c4d), Lightwave (lwo, lw, lws), 3D Studio(.3ds) and Object (.obj).

Step 4: Continue Creating

And that is continuing creating high quality works and then follow back Steps 2 and 3. Simple as that.

No Waves – No Surfing Today – What Are Your Alternatives?

Surf events happen each year, train yourself as early as you can. If you are a water person, a day with no waves to surf opens up whole new horizons for water activities. Sometimes it is a blessing, kind of like a reprieve. Do you ever get tired of surfing every day? Don’t answer that question! Consider all of the possibilities that are available to you if there are no waves to surf.

Here are some Surfboard Types for a no surf day:

· SUP

· Skimboard

· Wakeboard

· Paddleboard

· Wave Pool Surfboard

You have some real good alternatives. You can take your SUP to the ocean or to the nearest body of water and go for a leisure cruise or a great physical workout. It seems that more surfers are adding a SUP to their quiver. Many families are adding one or two SUPs or even more so that everyone in the family can get in the water. If they do not have a SUP, they go down to their local surf shop or water sports rental shop and rent one for the day for a very nominal amount.

As I have mentioned in prior articles, standup paddling has become a very popular activity for individuals and for families. It has become a great way to have fun while getting a good physical workout, cruising by yourself in a waterway, joining your local group of friends or a SUP club and turning your SUP experience into a social affair. Consider adding a SUP to your quiver of surfboards.

If you are younger, or a person with a lot of energy, you can go skimboarding. A skimboard is a small surfboard made to skim or slide in very shallow water with you standing on it. You can skim in water as shallow as 1/8th of an inch or less. In order to skim, you run as fast as you can carrying your skimboard, building up speed and momentum, drop your skimboard in the shallow water or wet surface, jump on it and then skim and slide for long distances. As you build your skill level, you can do spins, turns, jumps, and ride forward and backward. Be very careful when you are learning because you can lose control and land on your butt on the hard sand.

You can skim on lakes, rivers, and shorelines of just about any body of water of even on a wet lawn as long as there are no rocks or debris to inhibit your skim. Some of the kids riding skimboards ride them on grass hills in parks or on golf courses. You can also tow a rider on his or her skimboard behind a boat or even pulled by a car in an aqueduct. Skimboarding is a fun event and has turned into a small professional sport, with more and more companies making them. Most of the skimboards are hardboards made from fiberglass or wood, but there are also soft skimboards on the market called “the ONE” designed by Tom Morey the inventor of the Morey Boogie Board.

Wakeboards are another possibility, but you need a boat to tow you. You can ride behind the board as if you are water skiing or you can ride the wake of the boat letting go of the rope as if you are surfing. As a special note, Hobie Alter rode the wake behind a motor boat from Long Beach, CA to Catalina Island, which is approximately 26 miles and in the Guinness Book of World Records. You can also buy a wakeboard specifically designed for wakeboarding or you can use your surfboard, SUP or skimboard. Most surfers, engaging in this sport, will use their surfboards, either long or short.

Paddleboarding is another great way to spend time on the water. Paddleboards have been around for a long time and were made popular in Hawaii by Tom Blake back in the early 1900’s. A paddleboard is paddled in the prone position or on your knees. However, you can sit on the board and leisurely paddle around checking out the underwater foliage, fish or cruising around enjoying the fresh air and the view. You can also paddle your surfboard to keep yourself in paddling shape. There is a small group of individuals that race paddleboards. The most famous race is the annual Molokai to Diamond Head Race in Hawaii. It is a rough open ocean race where paddlers in the past have lost their lives.

Surfing a man made wave is another venue that has become somewhat popular. There are wave parks with simulated ocean waves some as big as 4 to 6 feet. There are also Standing Wave Machines where water is pushed under force up a wall simulating a wave. Special little surfboards are used and provided by the operators of the standing wave machines. The wave pools, wave parks, and standing wave machines are few and far between. Some are pretty good, but most are mediocre at best.

If you really need a break from surfing and don’t feel like riding one of the boards mentioned above, forget the couch and TV. Go to the gym and do some cardio, abs, and lift some weights. You can get a great workout preparing yourself for your next surf session and walk out of the gym feeling great because you have accomplished something for yourself. In a future article, I will be talking about a physical conditioning routine that all surfers should follow. I will also tell you about healthy eating, which is a big part of your physical well being, which will also help you improve your surfing.

Top 10 Regular Car Care Checks

1. ENGINE OIL

Without question this is the most important car care check and one you should be making on a regular basis. Try and check the oil level every other time you fill up with fuel to avoid unnecessary engine wear and overheating problems. Remember the oil warning light isn’t your reminder to top up, it’s telling you the oil level is too low so make sure you check your oil before it rears its ugly head!

2. COOLANT

Coolant is what you get from mixing antifreeze and water and has 3 major functions. The first is to prevent boiling; antifreeze boils at a higher temperature than water so when they are mixed together the higher boiling point stops the coolant turning into a gas. Why is this a good thing? Because gas isn’t very good at transferring heat which isn’t much help if you’re trying to keep an engine cool.

The second major function of coolant is to prevent freezing, stopping the engine, water pipes and radiator from cracking in winter. This lower freezing point is also a benefit derived from the antifreeze which freezes at a much lower temperature than water, usually in the region of -25° to -60°.

The third important function of coolant is to prevent corrosion of the cooling system, which is achieved through the chemicals added to the antifreeze. The cooling system contains a pump which moves the coolant around so the anti-corrosion properties in the coolant stop it seizing up.

The main point you should take away from this is that if you’re topping up your cooling system, don’t just use plain old water!

3. BRAKE FLUID

Brakes work by slowing a car down through the use of frictional materials and this friction creates a massive amount of heat. As a result, brake fluid has to cope with some extreme temperatures without turning to a gas. The brake fluid level will naturally fall over time as the brakes wear, meaning you should add it to the regular checks you make under the bonnet. Over time brake fluid also absorbs moisture from the air, lowering the boiling point of the fluid. This makes the brakes less effective and can lead to a spongy feel from the brake pedal which is why the brake fluid should be changed every two to three years.

4. POWER STEERING FLUID

Depending on the type of power steering fitted to your car, it may use a hydraulic fluid to operate. The level of power steering fluid shouldn’t drop much, so if you’re having to make regular top-ups the system should be checked for leaks. These days more cars are coming fitted with electric power assisted steering (knows as EPAS) which is more fuel efficient. In cars fitted with this type of power steering system there is no fluid to check.

5. SCREEN WASH

OK, so running out of screen wash isn’t going to cause a breakdown but if you’ve ever run out in the middle of winter, you’ll know how annoying it is not being able to wash away the muck and salt. Fortunately, it couldn’t be easier to top up; mix up some screen wash from a concentrate or buy ready mixed and simply pour it in until full.

There are two important things you should remember however. Firstly, never use washing up liquid to make a screen wash – the salt and detergents will damage the paint. Secondly, don’t cut corners and just use water. Worst case scenario, the washer bottle could crack, as could any of the pipes that supply the washer jets. Best case is that you can’t clear your screen because the system is all frozen up. Screen wash contains a mild antifreeze to prevent all this.

6. WIPER BLADES

As above, wiper blades in a poor state aren’t going to make the car come to a grinding halt but they are important nonetheless. Old, perished or split wiper blades are worse than useless at clearing away rain or motorway spray. They also tend to screech each time they attempt to clear the screen, which is reason enough alone to throw them away and get a new set fitted.

7. BULBS

It’s good to see where you are going in the dark and it’s just as important that other drivers are alerted when you’re slowing down or about to change direction. Headlights, brake lights and indicators should all be checked on a regular basis and you should also add tail lights and sidelights to that list. Of course, if your car is over three years old it will get picked up at an MOT but then it’s going to cost you a retest over something very simple. Equally, drivers of cars under three years old should definitely be making a regular check on their lighting because the only other people that will do it for you in between servicing are the police!

8. TYRE TREAD DEPTH

New tyres arrive with 8mm tread depth with the minimum legal tread depth of a tyre being 1.6mm across three quarters of the width. That said, the ability of the tyre to disperse water when the tread gets down to 1.6mm is seriously reduced. So much so that it can take up to 50% further to stop the car. The best advice is to change them when the tread gets down to 3mm.

A quick visual check of tread depth can be done very easily by looking for the wear indicator that sit in the grooves of the tyre. The indicator shows the minimum tread depth and when it is reached the tyre should be changed immediately. Driving with tread below 1.6mm is an MOT failure and will cost you 3 points on your licence if caught by the police.

9. TYRE PRESSURES

Pumping up the tyres will not only save you money but will make sure the tyre is working as effectively as possible to keep you safe. Remember, tyres are the only things keeping the car on the road and deal with the forces of breaking, accelerating and cornering.

Low tyre pressures increase the load on the engine, wasting fuel and also increase the rate of tyre wear. It’s also worth remembering that if you’re planning to carry a heavy load, you should increase the tyre pressures accordingly (your car manual will advise of the correct pressures). Finally, don’t forget to top up the spare! It may look inflated but may go flat as a pancake when you load the weight of the car onto it.

10. CLEANING

A good clean will look after your paint work and prevent potential corrosion or rust, especially in winter when the road salt and grit gives the bodywork a very hard time. Always clean off bird poo straight away as it will immediately start to burn through the paint and can leave marks that can’t be washed off or polished out.

The inside is more down to your personal preference, some don’t mind it being a pigsty, although you might want to think about cleaning up your act if your friends start refusing lifts! The main thing is not to let it get in such a state that it can’t be made good when it comes to sale time.

Auto Restoration – These Are The Steps That It Will Take To Build A Great Looking Car

Car paint protection build your car looks during restoration. I know that I have done something like this in the past, bit I will try to expand on the earlier article. Keep in mind that this will by know means cover the entire gamut on this topic. First and foremost is that you want to learn as much as possible before you begin the project.

Now that I have covered the easy stuff, let’s dive in head first. Obviously when I say learn as much as you can about the car before you start the project; I mean read the magazines and publications related to the steps of the restoration of a car.

Let me outline a few of my choices as far a reading material on this subject. My favorite publication bar none is Hemmings motor news, this publication holds a wealth of information on this subject. Hemmings also covers locating parts, and quite a few other things that you may need.

Next I would say that you should subscribe to publications like Rod & Custom magazine, this magazine will also help you greatly as you learn about the car your restoring. I know it all sounds like a lot of reading, but the more you know, the better it will turn out in the end.

Also I would recommend Car Craft magazine, and Hot Rod magazine, these are great magazines. They will often expose a complete build on a car, I have read quite a few of those issues. They give a lot of good tips and information that you can use.

Finally the last stage of the reading, got to a Barnes & Nobel book store, and get any books that you can find that are related to the specific car that you want to restore. This includes the By The Numbers books, and anything you can find that focuses on your particular car.

That finishes the reading part of the process; now we will assume that you already have the car that you want to restore. We can proceed to the inspection of the car, this begins with the front of the car and works to the rear of the car, or you can work from the rear forward if you prefer.

During the inspection we will be looking for things that need to be replaced or repaired. What you will do here is get a notebook, or a laptop computer. Divide a page in to three sections; at the top your going to label the sections good, repair, and replace.

In these sections you will be putting the parts that belong in each section in the appropriate section. I would also suggest taking pictures of all of these parts before you remove them from the car. This will build your first parts list, you can begin buying the parts for your car.

This will more then likely be a huge list because you will be covering every part of the car, from the grille, to the tail lights. You don’t want to miss anything, it will slow you down in the end. After you have finished this; you can move on to the tear down stage of the process.

During the tear down stage of the process, you will find more parts that need to be replaced, or repaired so keep your list handy. Remember you can never take to many pictures. The pictures will help you re-assemble the car when it goes back together.

At the first of the tear down process I will tell you one thing, you will need a lot of boxes; you can’t have too many of them. As you tear the car down you will label boxes for the front end something like this steering, suspension, grille, bumper, and the like.

The better that you do this part the easier the car will go back together, oh and by the way, you will need a lot of plastic bags of all sizes. You will also need a boat load of labels for those bags, In the bags you will store nuts, bolts, screws, and other small things that you would otherwise lose.

Don’t think for one minute that you will remember where every nut, bolt, and screw came from. I don’t care if you have a memory like an elephant, after the car sits a while, you will forget. I say this from experience, it has happened to me in the past.

Now we move from tare down to the media blast stage. This is the stage where we get the car to a media blasting company. Depending on how much money you have to spend, will decide on the media that you want to use to blast your car.

I prefer soda blasting, as it won’t damage the sheet metal on the car, and a sand blaster who is just learning the ropes can ruin your classic car for you. This is why I would plan to spend the extra money to soda blast, or acid the car.

Both process are messy for you to clean after you get them back, you will be blowing sand, or soda out of all of the tiny little cracks for quite a while. With the acid dipping you will find that in the cracks on the car also, you need to get all of it out.

If you don’t and you leave sand, or soda in the car; it will come out in your primer, and in your paint. You know that means ugly paint; and for the acid, if you leave any of it your primer will peel in the areas that you didn’t clean it out, all it take is water to clean the acid out.

The next stage is the major body work, such as rust, frame damage, and big dents. This is the time when the real work starts. You will be cutting, pulling, welding, and grinding so get ready to get down an dirty here.

This stage will usually take quite some time, so be ready to spend the hours getting this right. After you have finished the cutting, pulling, welding, and grinding; you can move on the the finish body work. This is the stage where the car starts to really look good.

When you first start on this stage of the body work your car should have the rough body work completed already. This means that the body work areas of the car should all be mudded, and finished to 40 grit sand paper.

In the finish body work stage you will complete the body work. What this means is that you will be adding more body filler where you need it, and the finishing that body work to 80 grit sand paper on the longest hand file board that you can find.

You need to check the body work areas for smoothness every once in a while. You can do this by putting a cloth on your hand, and running it over your body work area. The reason I say use a cloth is simply that you can feel the work better that way.

The next step is to apply some metal glaze to your body work areas, this is a thinner type of filler designed for very small dents and waves. After you have applied the glaze, you cane finish it to 180 grit sand paper.

After you have finished the entire car to 180 grit sand paper on a hand board. Your ready for the first stage of primer. If you have a lot of bare spots, I’d suggest that you start with an etching primer before you move to urethane primer.

I would always give primer of any kind at least 24 hours to dry. After the primer has dried you can hit it lightly with some 600 grit wet sand paper, then spray the entire car with three coats of high build urethane primer, waiting 15 minutes between coats for flash time.

1. Team Building Explained

For years now, people’s perception of team building has been synonymous with images of people building rafts, taking part in ‘awkward’ trust exercises, or being stranded whilst orienteering in the middle of nowhere.

It may come as a surprise to a lot of people to learn that things have actually evolved.

A survey by Vodafone UK and YouGov has concluded the UK staff have become turned off by team building as they often breed ‘awkwardness’. According to the survey, experiences like being blindfolded and led by colleagues are considered the least effective team-building activities.

Findings showed the most effective events are social events like going out for a drink or a meal; Team building events that are interactive, fun, fast-paced and down-right entertaining event are the sort you will want to share with colleagues.

2. Conferences – The Good/The Bad

Whilst conferences are the single most common way to converge an entire company in one location for a collaborative session of discussion and networking, quite often you are asked to provide Conference Energiser activities to whip-up the room and revitalise delegates throughout the away-day after prolonged periods of intense presentations and slide shows.

A poorly delivered Staff Conference can have a negative impact on the morale of your employees.

Without the addition of carefully choreographed team building activities, energisers or keynote speaker, you can be faced with delegates criticising the day for being “death-by-PowerPoint”, “chalk-and-talk” or another favourite is “analysis-paralysis”.

3. Think about Going Abroad

Organising team building events that are to be delivered overseas and internationally can be a daunting event to manage as there are so many variables and added logistics to cope with; hundreds of flights, hundreds of requirements, hundreds of hotel rooms – all in a venue that aren’t exactly fluent in english – needless to say things can be lost in translation!

That being said the output of such an event is very useful to a team and something where people are away from their comfort zone and having to work together will definitely mould a team quicker and stronger than anything local.

Often clients want to drill down to finite details about the specific activities that make up team building workshops including a minute-by-minute agenda. Not only is that not applicable for this type of training since it’s often a fluid and dynamic process, but it is really focusing on the texture of the bark on the trees rather than stepping back for a view of the forest.

What is important is having a clear goal for this portion of your meeting. One mistake companies make is having a “We do a team building activity at this meeting every year” attitude with no real thought about what they want to get out of it. How do you choose the right team building activity? It’s best to take the Stephen Covey approach and begin with the end in mind.

Before you start filling out internet forms and making phone calls to team building companies, think about the goals for this session. If you are the information gatherer, press the decision makers for additional information beyond the tired and overused “team building” and “communication” for something more concrete like breaking down silos or building creative problem solving skills. On the surface you might be looking for something fun and interactive, but there’s a good chance that if the company is spending thousands of dollars on this event, someone is looking for tangible outcomes.

Team building activities are exercises that can help teams build cohesion and work through a host of common group issues. They are used as educational tools to provide opportunities to at least begin discussions that can be continued back at the workplace.

How do you choose the right team building activity for your meeting? It’s like the ingredients of a delicious recipe. Instead of focusing on the bok choy, which isn’t particularly interesting in itself but put in context of other ingredients becomes a flavourful dish, begin with the end in mind. Waste Management – What the Future Holds

The volume of waste sent to landfill and the devastating impact this has on the environment – and our health – is alarming to say the least.

While a surge in media coverage and education initiatives around global warming have made us more environmentally-conscious, initiating a recycling frenzy in certain communities, the growing population presents a bigger challenge. Not only does the increase in waste generation drive landfill, but the mounting demand for food and consumer products means global energy demand – and, in turn, pollution – is on the up.

More fossil fuels will be required to satisfy consumer demands – on both a personal and commercial level. Manufacturing will be on the rise; more coal and natural gas will be used to produce electricity for factories, offices and homes; and transport growth will drive fuel consumption and emissions of air pollution.

With our environment under threat, substantial measures to reduce landfill and cut global warming emissions are more critical than ever.

Recycling of Inert Waste within Australia Could Be on the Up

Until recently, China was importing over 30 million tonnes of waste annually, from across the globe. In 2016 – 2017 alone, Australia exported 1.25 million tonnes of recycled material to China.

However, in January this year China implemented its National Sword Policy, which restricts the import of 24 categories of waste, including mixed plastics, glass and cardboard to name a few.

These stringent new import standards have severely impacted the Australian recycling industry, with recycling commodity prices dropping by about 80%. As a result, with nowhere for the recycling material to go, local councils are facing cost rises of up to $50 million per year.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. According to Mike Ritchie, Managing Director of environmental waste advisors MRA Consulting Group, the National Sword Policy could present the nudge Australia needs to initiate a move towards processing recycled waste on-shore – and protect itself from future fluctuations in the global (and Asian in particular) recycling market.

Ritchie’s recently released paper China National Sword: The role of Federal Government outlines why he is calling for a $150 million Government investment in new infrastructure and systems, as well as a realignment of the Australian recycling policy.

Inert waste is easy to recycle in WA and doesn’t need to be exported. It’s therefore not at risk of significant price increases (outside of the landfill levy which is set to increase from $90 to $105 per tonne from 1st July 2018).

Waste to Energy – A Waste Management Revolution?

Not only has recycling become a key growth sector, but experts are seeking new ways to tackle the problem. Enlightened minds, innovative technologies and the health of our planet at stake are driving a waste management revolution.

Waste to energy (WtE) is an emerging series of technologies designed to generate energy from waste with minimum damage to the environment. While still in its infancy, the global WtE industry is projected to exceed $43 billion by 2024.

The range of waste products which can be converted to energy in the form of electricity and / or heat is widespread and includes:

Biomass or biogenic waste, such as food, garden waste, paper, cardboard, wood and leather.
Non-biomass combustible materials, such as plastics and synthetic materials made from petroleum.
Non-combustible materials, such as metals and glass.

This conversion of waste into a fuel source can be achieved through a range of processes:

Incineration: This is currently the most common method for processing waste into fuel and involves burning organic waste at high temperatures. The heat generated during this process is used to create energy. While the emissions released during the incineration process is a widely debated topic, modern incineration facilities use specialised equipment to prevent the release of harmful gas into the environment.

Gasification: This process uses high temperatures to convert organic carbonaceous waste into carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide and, with the use of oxygen and / or steam. Combustion does not occur with this process, but a renewable energy is produced in the form of syngas, a renewable energy source which can be turned into transportation fuels, fertilizers and chemicals.

Pyrolysis: Using high temperatures, pyrolysis is the thermochemical decomposition of organic waste to produce renewable energy (in the form of solids, liquids and gas), to be used as a fuel source.

Anaerobic Digestion: This is a set of biological processes in which micro-organisms break down biodegradable waste into biogas, without the use of oxygen. Biogas can be processed into renewable natural gas or used as a transportation fuel. It can also be used to generate electricity and / or heat.

Landfill Gas Recovery: As landfill waste decomposes, it produces methane. Left untreated, methane is harmful to the environment, however when safely extracted and processed, it can be used to create electricity.

In Australia, with the soaring energy prices and landfill levies on the rise, turning waste into renewable energy provides a tangible solution to both issues.

While thermal treatment of waste to energy is only small-scale in Australia, Dr. Stuart Wagland, Senior Lecturer in Energy & Environmental Chemistry at Cranfield University, believes – based on its success in the UK – this should be a key growth area for Australia.

Speaking at the 2018 Australian Waste to Energy Forum, Stuart cited political climate as one of the key drivers towards waste to energy in the UK, with attractive government incentives pushing industry growth.

He says the waste to energy industry – and, in particular, thermal treatment – is growing and evolving rapidly. “If you asked me where I thought the technology would be five years ago, I would have gotten it wrong. We have artificial intelligence creeping into our waste management…. It’s difficult to say what the future holds.”

But one thing is for sure, with innovative technologies being developed at such a rapid pace and global warming a hot topic across the nation, the future of renewable energy in Australia looks bright.
